ATTENTION Homeowners and Customers
Two things to know ABOUT LICENSES and INSURANCE
BEFORE hiring ANY tradesPERSON OR CONTRACTOR

  1. LICENSING – It is easy to be mislead about what is a proper/valid license.  Properly licensed contractors ALWAYS pull their own permits.  If you are asked to pull your own permit,  the contractor/tradesperson is NOT properly licensed to do so.  And that means they are not qualified to perform the work.  Homeowners who pull their own permit are LEGALLY bound to perform and/or oversee ALL work that is performed – it’s Florida law.  A properly licensed contractor or tradesperson will list their license number in all advertisements/promotions.  Basically, if a person is qualified to perform construction they will have a proper license to do so – if not, they don’t.*
  2. INSURANCE – Always ask your contractor for a ‘Certificate of Insurance’ for Liability and Workers-Comp Insurance.  The ‘COI’ is sent to you by the insurance agent at no charge to you or to the tradesperson.  To protect you against fraud, the tradesperson can not under any circumstances provide the ‘COI’ directly to you, it must always come from their insurance agent’s office.  Properly licensed tradespeople carry proper insurance and have no qualms about providing you with a ‘COI’.**

*NOTE - A business license does NOT constitute a valid construction or contractor’s  license.  The words ‘licensed & insured’ in an ad or on a truck does NOT suffice - there should be a valid license number printed as well.

**NOTE- A Workers-Comp ‘Waiver’ does NOT provide financial protection to homeowners if a worker is seriously injured while working on your property.
